Edimax Extender Green Light but No Internet Access
An Edimax Wi-Fi extender can show a steady green light while connected devices still report “No Internet.” This usually means the extender has power and may have established a wireless link with the main router, but that link is not successfully carrying usable internet traffic. The LED confirms part of the connection, not every stage between your phone, extender, router and internet service provider.
The fault may involve incorrect Wi-Fi details, a weak backhaul signal, an unsuitable operating mode, an IP address conflict or a problem with the home router itself. These issues are common in Australian homes, particularly where an extender sits several rooms away from an NBN modem-router, behind thick brick walls or near appliances that interfere with wireless signals.
What The Green Light Actually Confirms
Edimax indicator meanings vary between models, so check the label or manual for your specific extender. In general, green may indicate that the unit is powered, that the wireless link is acceptable, or that the extender has completed a basic connection to the host router. It does not necessarily mean that the router has provided a valid IP address or that DNS and internet access are working.
Begin with a simple separation test. Stand near the main router and connect a phone or laptop directly to its Wi-Fi. Open several websites rather than relying on a single app, since an individual service may be temporarily unavailable. If direct router Wi-Fi also has no internet, the Edimax device is unlikely to be the main cause. Check the NBN connection box, modem-router status and any outage notice from your provider, such as Telstra, Optus or TPG.
If the main router works normally but the extended network does not, identify the exact failure point. Connect to the Edimax network and check whether the device says “connected without internet,” whether websites fail to load, or whether only one device is affected. A single laptop may have a stale network profile, while every phone and smart television failing through the extender points to its configuration or wireless link.
Restart The Network In The Correct Order
A complete restart can clear a temporary DHCP, routing or wireless negotiation problem. Turn off the Edimax extender, the main router and, if separate, the NBN connection box. Leave the equipment powered down for about a minute. Turn on the NBN box first, wait until its normal online indicators settle, then start the router and allow it several minutes to establish service.
Switch on the extender only after the router is fully operational. Give it time to reconnect before testing a website. Restarting devices in this order helps the router become the first device to request and manage local network addresses. Repeatedly switching everything on at the same time can leave the extender waiting for a DHCP response or holding a temporary connection from an earlier session.
Also restart the device being tested. Phones and computers can retain an old gateway or DNS entry after moving between the main Wi-Fi and the extender SSID. On a laptop, disconnect and reconnect to Wi-Fi; on a phone, briefly enable and disable flight mode. Avoid testing from a location where the extender signal is barely visible, because a green status light does not compensate for a poor connection to the client device.
Check The Extender’s Wireless Configuration
Log in to the Edimax setup interface while connected to the extender. The address differs by model, but Edimax devices commonly use an address such as 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1. The correct address may be printed on the device label, shown in the manual, or displayed as the gateway address on the connected computer. If the setup page does not open, disconnect from mobile data or VPN software and make sure the browser is using the Edimax network.
Run through the wireless setup wizard and confirm the selected host network. A small spelling difference in the SSID, an outdated password or a changed router security setting can produce a misleading green connection state. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully, paying attention to capital letters, spaces and characters that look alike. Save the settings and allow the extender to reboot before reconnecting.
Security compatibility can also matter. Older extenders may struggle with certain combinations of WPA3-only security, band steering or advanced mesh features. If the Edimax model supports only 2.4 GHz, select the router’s 2.4 GHz network during setup rather than a 5 GHz-only SSID. Many Australian NBN routers broadcast a single name for both bands, so temporarily separating the bands in the router settings can make the correct network easier to select.
Check that the extender is set to the intended mode. Repeater or range-extender mode should obtain network information from the primary router. Improve The Link Between Router And Extender

The extender must receive a strong signal from the main router before it can repeat that signal. Placing it in a back bedroom, garage or upstairs corner where the original Wi-Fi is already weak gives the extender very little useful bandwidth.
Move the unit to a position roughly halfway between the router and the area with poor coverage. Test it in an open hallway or living area first, then move it gradually if necessary. Keep it away from metal cabinets, refrigerators, cordless phone bases and large televisions. In a brick-veneer or double-brick house, walls around kitchens, bathrooms and garages can reduce signal strength much more than expected.
The client device also needs a reasonable connection to the extender. A green extender LED cannot show whether a laptop at the far end of the house is struggling to communicate. Test beside the Edimax unit, then walk towards the problem area while checking whether browsing remains stable. If internet access works near the extender but fails at the intended location, the issue is coverage rather than the ISP connection.
For larger Australian homes, especially across two storeys or separate living areas, a wired access point may be preferable to wireless repeating. Ethernet backhaul avoids using part of the wireless connection between the router and extender. If running cable is impractical, placing two compatible access points or using a suitable mesh system may provide more consistent coverage than moving one repeater to the edge of reception.
Verify IP Addresses, Gateway And DNS
When a device connects to Wi-Fi but cannot browse, inspect its network details. It should normally receive a private IP address from the main router, such as 192.168.1.x or 192.168.2.x, along with a default gateway and DNS server. An address beginning with 169.254 usually means the device did not receive a DHCP lease. That points towards a connection or configuration problem between the extender and router.

Two devices acting as DHCP servers can cause intermittent access, incorrect gateways and confusing results. If the Edimax is in access-point mode, follow its manual carefully: some models disable DHCP automatically, while others require a manual setting.
Do not change the LAN IP randomly while troubleshooting. First record the existing settings and identify the router’s address by checking a device connected directly to the router. An Edimax setup page may become inaccessible after its address changes, even if the wireless connection continues to work. If you assign a static management address, keep it within the router’s subnet but outside the router’s automatic DHCP pool.
DNS can create the appearance of no internet when the connection itself is working. Test a known site by IP only if you understand the limitations, or temporarily try a reputable public DNS service on one test device. If names fail but a direct IP test works, investigate DNS settings in the router or extender. Avoid changing every device individually, since the main router is normally the best place to manage DNS for the household.
Reset And Reconfigure The Edimax Unit
If the extender was previously linked to another router, moved to a new NBN provider or given a different Wi-Fi password, a factory reset may be faster than hunting through old settings. A reset removes stored SSIDs, passwords, operating modes and custom network details. Before resetting, locate the model number, download the relevant manual if available and note the current router Wi-Fi name and password.
With the extender powered on, press and hold its reset button for the period specified by Edimax, commonly around 10 seconds. Use a paperclip carefully and watch for the LEDs to change. Release the button and wait for the restart to finish. Do not unplug the device during this process. Afterward, connect to the default Edimax setup network or use an Ethernet cable if the model supports it.
Use the browser-based setup page to select the host router, enter the wireless password and choose a clear extended-network name. A name that identifies the extender can make testing easier, although using the same name may be convenient after the configuration is proven. Keep the extender’s firmware current where the model and manufacturer provide a safe update, but avoid interrupting a firmware installation.
If resetting does not help, test the Edimax with a short, simple arrangement: router and extender in the same room, 2.4 GHz enabled, standard security selected and one phone connected nearby. If this works, restore distance and advanced settings one change at a time. If it still fails beside the router while direct router Wi-Fi is reliable, the extender may have a hardware fault or a model compatibility limitation.
Practical Checks Before Replacing Equipment
