Setting up an Edimax router in bridge mode between two networks
An Edimax router can do more than provide a separate wireless network. In bridge mode, it can connect two existing network segments so devices in one area can reach services, shared storage, printers or automation equipment located in another. The exact menu names vary between Edimax models and firmware versions. Some devices call the feature Bridge, Wireless Bridge, WDS Bridge, Client Bridge or Access Point Bridge. A successful setup depends on planning the two sides of the connection. One Edimax device, or the main router, must act as the network gateway. Understand what bridge mode changes

A device connected behind it can access the internet through the upstream router, but devices on the two networks may be unable to discover each other easily.
Bridge mode changes that arrangement. The Edimax unit stops behaving as an independent gateway and passes network traffic between the two sides. The primary router continues to assign IP addresses, so computers, smart televisions, cameras and network storage should normally appear on the same subnet. If the main router uses 192.168.1.x, a bridged client should receive an address in that range rather than a separate 192.168.2.x network.
This distinction matters for shared services. A printer connected to the main router may be visible to a laptop in the remote room, and a media server can remain reachable without adding manual routes. A bridge also avoids double NAT, which can interfere with gaming, remote access, VPN services and some smart-home hubs.
A bridge is different from a repeater. A repeater retransmits wireless traffic, often using the same radio for communication with the main router and connected clients. A wireless bridge generally connects a remote wired segment to the main wireless LAN. Prepare the primary and secondary networks
Record the main router’s LAN address, subnet mask, DHCP range and wireless security settings before starting. Common private address ranges include 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x, but an NBN provider’s supplied gateway may use another range. Choose a fixed management address for the Edimax bridge outside the DHCP pool but inside the primary subnet. Place the two units where their wireless signal is reliable. Brick walls, foil-backed insulation and metal garage doors can reduce the quality of a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz link. Many Edimax routers use 192.168.2.1 by default, although a reset device may display a different address or obtain one from the existing network.
If the page does not load, check the computer’s assigned IP address and gateway. A device connected to an Edimax router at its factory default may receive an address in the 192.168.2.x range. If the computer has retained an address from another network, renew its DHCP lease or temporarily configure a compatible private address. Configure the wireless bridge link
Select Bridge, WDS Bridge or Client Bridge, then scan for nearby wireless networks. Choose the SSID broadcast by the primary router and enter its security key exactly. Wireless passwords are case-sensitive, and an accidental space at the beginning or end can cause a failed association. If the main router has separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, select the band that matches the Edimax model and the distance between the devices.
Some WDS implementations require the MAC address of each participating access point. Apply the changes and wait for the router to reboot. The administration page may disappear because the Edimax device has moved from 192.168.2.1 to its address on the main LAN. Reconnect the computer to the primary network, then browse to the new management address. Avoid enabling routing, NAT or a second DHCP service after the bridge is working. Those features return the unit to a routed configuration. If separate guest access is required, create it on the primary router where possible. Test performance, addressing and device access
Begin testing with a computer connected by Ethernet to the bridged Edimax unit. Confirm that it receives an IP address from the primary router, has the expected subnet mask and lists the primary router as its default gateway. The computer should reach the internet and open the Edimax management page at its reserved address.
Next, test local traffic rather than relying only on an internet speed check. Open a shared folder, print to a device on the main LAN or connect to a media server. A successful internet test proves that routing works, but it does not prove that the bridge is passing local broadcast and discovery traffic correctly. Smart-home devices can be especially sensitive to multicast handling, so test the actual equipment intended for the remote network.
Check the wireless link quality in the Edimax status page. A low signal level, high error count or frequent reconnection indicates a placement or interference problem. Move the bridge away from televisions, cordless phone bases, large appliances and enclosed metal cabinets.
