An Edimax Wi-Fi extender can improve wireless access in rooms where the router signal is weak, but its position matters as much as its settings. A device installed at the far edge of coverage may have difficulty receiving data from the router, so it has little useful signal to repeat. The best location usually sits between the router and the problem area, where the existing connection is still reliable.
Good placement also depends on the construction and layout of the home. Brick walls, concrete slabs, foil-backed insulation, mirrors, metal appliances and large water-filled objects can reduce wireless range. In an Australian home, the router may be placed near an NBN connection point at the front of the house while the office, bedroom or outdoor entertaining area is much farther away.
Before using the Edimax setup page, WPS button or default IP address, treat placement as part of the installation process. A few minutes spent checking signal strength and moving the extender can produce a larger improvement than changing advanced wireless settings. Give the extended network a clear name and strong password. Some Edimax devices can copy the router’s wireless name, while others use a suffix to identify the repeated network. A single shared name can make movement around the home more convenient, but devices do not always roam between access points as smoothly as a dedicated mesh system. A separate name makes testing easier because you can see exactly which unit your phone or laptop is using.
Use extender or repeater mode when the connection between the Edimax unit and the router will be wireless. Choose access-point mode when you can connect the Edimax device to the router with Ethernet. A strong signal icon alone does not prove that the extender has a fast connection to the router.
If performance is poor near the extender, move it closer to the router. Make small changes rather than relocating it across the house. After each move, allow the unit to reconnect and repeat the same test so the results remain comparable.
