How to Connect an Edimax Router Using a Static ISP Address

A static IP connection gives your Edimax router a fixed public address instead of an address that changes whenever the internet service reconnects. This arrangement is common with business broadband, hosted services, remote access systems and some specialised NBN plans in Australia. The ISP normally supplies several values, including the WAN IP address, subnet mask, gateway and DNS server addresses.

The connection process is different from using DHCP or PPPoE. An Edimax router will not automatically discover the required static settings, so the information must be entered in its web-based setup screen. Before changing anything, identify whether the Edimax device connects directly to an NBN NTD, a VDSL modem, a fibre ONT or an existing modem-router, because the correct operating mode depends on the equipment supplied at the property.

Check The ISP Details And Network Equipment

Find the connection letter, service email or business account document supplied by the ISP. Static internet services generally provide an IPv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway and one or more DNS addresses. Some providers also specify a VLAN ID, an MTU value, a required MAC address or a separate username and password. Enter these values exactly as supplied; a single incorrect digit can prevent the WAN connection from working.

A static public address is different from a private address used inside the home or office. The public IP belongs to the router’s internet-facing WAN interface. Devices such as laptops, printers and access points should continue to receive local addresses from the Edimax DHCP server, commonly in a range such as 192.168.2.x or 192.168.1.x. Do not enter the ISP’s public address as the router’s LAN address.

Australian services vary by access technology. An NBN FTTP or fixed wireless connection may provide an Ethernet hand-off from an NBN NTD, while FTTB or FTTN services usually require a compatible VDSL modem before the Edimax router can manage the local network. HFC services may use an NBN connection box or an ISP modem. Check whether the ISP expects the Edimax to operate as the main router or as an access point behind another router. Where possible, place the ISP modem in bridge mode, or use the Edimax access-point mode if the upstream router cannot be bridged.

Connect To The Edimax Setup Page

Turn off the NBN connection equipment or upstream modem, then connect an Ethernet cable from its LAN or Ethernet port to the Edimax router’s WAN or Internet port. Connect a second cable from an Edimax LAN port to a computer. Wired setup is preferable because the wireless network may restart while settings are being applied. A laptop with an Ethernet adapter is useful for this stage, especially when configuring equipment in a small office.

Power on the upstream device first and wait until its connection indicators settle. Then start the Edimax router and allow it a few minutes to complete its boot process. Open a browser on the connected computer and enter the router’s management address. Depending on the model, this may be an Edimax setup hostname or a private address such as 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1. The exact address is printed on the device label, in the quick installation guide or in the current network details shown by the computer.

If the setup page does not open, check that the computer has received a local address from the Edimax router. Disconnect VPN software, turn off any manually configured proxy and test another browser. A factory-reset Edimax unit may use different default credentials from an older model, so use the login details printed on its label or supplied documentation. Resetting should be a last resort because it removes the current wireless name, password and internet configuration.

After signing in, locate a menu named Internet, WAN, Network, Internet Setup or Quick Setup. Edimax firmware differs between models, and menu names may change between hardware revisions. Select the connection type labelled Static IP, Fixed IP or Static IPv4. Do not select Dynamic IP or DHCP simply because the router is connected by Ethernet; DHCP tells the router to request an address automatically, which is not the same as entering an assigned fixed address.

Enter The Static WAN Configuration

Place the ISP-provided public IP address in the WAN or Internet IP field. Enter the subnet mask in its dedicated field, then enter the default gateway exactly as documented. The gateway is usually within the same routed block as the assigned IP, but it should never be guessed. A static address can appear correctly formatted and still fail if it is paired with the wrong mask or gateway.

Add the primary and secondary DNS server addresses supplied by the ISP. If the provider permits alternatives, reliable public DNS services can be used, but an ISP’s own DNS servers may be better suited to local support and service testing. DNS affects the translation of website names into IP addresses; it does not replace the default gateway and cannot repair an incorrect WAN route.

Some Edimax interfaces show a setting for obtaining DNS automatically. Disable that option when the ISP has supplied fixed DNS values, then save the WAN configuration. If the service document includes an MTU, VLAN or 802.1Q requirement, enter it only when the ISP specifically requires it. Many Australian NBN connections work without a VLAN tag, while certain providers or business services use a VLAN for traffic separation. Applying a random VLAN ID can stop the connection entirely.

A static IP may be tied to the MAC address of an earlier router. If the ISP says that MAC registration is required, use the Edimax MAC Clone or MAC Address Clone feature and copy the old router’s WAN MAC address. This should be done only when the provider requests it. After saving, restart the Edimax and, where relevant, restart the NBN NTD or modem so the upstream equipment clears its previous session.

Set Up The Local Wireless Network

The WAN settings control the path between the Edimax and the ISP, while wireless settings control devices inside the property. Choose a clear network name for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, or retain separate names if you want to select a band manually. Avoid using personal details, street numbers or the ISP account name in the wireless SSID. A café or office in Sydney may have several nearby networks, so a distinctive name makes it easier to identify the correct connection.

Use WPA2-Personal with AES or WPA3-Personal where the Edimax model supports it and all client devices are compatible. Set a long wireless passphrase containing several unrelated words and numbers. Avoid WEP, open wireless access and obsolete mixed security modes. After saving wireless changes, reconnect phones, televisions, printers and smart-home devices using the new details.

Leave the Edimax LAN address separate from the ISP’s public WAN address. Enable the built-in DHCP server unless another trusted device is deliberately managing local addresses. A typical private LAN could use 192.168.10.1 for the router and a DHCP range from 192.168.10.100 to 192.168.10.200. This arrangement gives room for manually assigned printers, cameras and access points without causing duplicate addresses.

If the Edimax is being used behind an existing router, switch it to Access Point mode when that option is available. The upstream device should provide DHCP, NAT and the public static address, while the Edimax supplies wireless coverage and Ethernet ports. This is often the cleanest choice for a rental property in Adelaide or a regional office where the ISP’s modem cannot be placed in bridge mode.

Verify The Connection And Fix Common Errors

Open the Edimax status page after saving the configuration. The WAN section should show the assigned public IP, subnet mask, gateway and DNS information rather than zeros, a blank value or a private address such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x. A public IP shown on the Edimax does not guarantee that browsing will work, but it confirms that the router accepted the basic static configuration.

Test the connection from a computer connected by Ethernet before testing wireless devices. First try to reach the Edimax LAN address, then open a known website by name. If a numeric public address responds but websites do not load, review the DNS entries. If neither local access nor internet access works, check the Ethernet cable, WAN port selection, gateway and subnet mask.

If the Edimax WAN page displays a private address, an upstream modem is probably still operating as a router, or the cable is connected to the wrong port. Decide whether the Edimax should be the main router or an access point. If it must receive the public static address, configure the upstream modem for bridge or modem-only mode and connect the cable to the Edimax WAN port. If bridging is unavailable, keep the upstream router in control and configure the Edimax as an access point.

An address conflict can occur when the Edimax LAN address matches the modem, NBN gateway or another network device. Change the Edimax LAN subnet, save the setting and reconnect to the new management address. Also review whether the ISP requires PPPoE instead of static IP, since some services supply a fixed public address but still require a login session. The ISP’s connection type takes priority over assumptions based on the word “static”.

After the connection works, record the WAN values in a secure location and export an Edimax configuration backup if the firmware supports it. Update the router firmware through the official Edimax support route, then review remote management, firewall and port-forwarding settings. A static public address makes a network easier to reach consistently, so unnecessary internet-facing services should remain disabled.

The key points are simple: use the ISP’s exact WAN address, mask, gateway and DNS values; keep the public WAN address separate from the private LAN; and choose router or access-point mode according to the equipment already installed. When an Edimax router is connected to an NBN NTD, modem or fibre hand-off with the correct mode and static IPv4 details, it can provide stable wired and wireless access throughout the home or workplace. Remember that the static address belongs on the internet-facing interface, while the local network needs its own private addressing scheme.
