How to Configure an Edimax Router as a Wireless Repeater
An Edimax router can often be reused as a wireless repeater to extend an existing Wi-Fi network without running an Ethernet cable between devices. In this mode, the Edimax unit connects to the main router over Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts the signal to areas with weak coverage.
The exact menu names depend on the model and firmware version. Some Edimax devices use a dedicated Repeater or Universal Repeater mode, while others provide a Site Survey option inside the wireless settings. Before changing anything, locate the router’s model number and confirm that the firmware supports wireless repeating.
The installation is easiest when the Edimax router is placed near the main router during setup. After the connection works, move it to a position between the main router and the area that needs better coverage. A repeater cannot improve a signal that is already too weak at its own location.
Check Compatibility And Prepare The Devices
Start by checking the Edimax label, user manual, or administration interface for supported operating modes. Look for terms such as Repeater, Universal Repeater, Range Extender, WDS Repeater, or Wireless Bridge. These functions are similar in purpose, but their compatibility requirements can differ. A WDS-based setup may require matching settings on the primary router, while Universal Repeater mode is usually more flexible.
Write down the existing wireless network name, Wi-Fi password, encryption type, and router address. The Edimax setup page may use a default IP address printed on its label or documented in its manual.
Place the Edimax router within a few feet of the main router for initial configuration. Connect a computer or phone to the Edimax device using its temporary wireless network, if available. A wired connection can make setup more reliable, but the finished repeater connection will operate without an Ethernet cable. If the device has previously been configured, a factory reset may be necessary before starting a clean installation.
Open The Edimax Setup Page
Connect to the Edimax router’s default Wi-Fi network or use an Ethernet connection to one of its LAN ports. Disable mobile data temporarily when configuring from a phone so the browser stays connected to the Edimax network. If the login details have been changed and cannot be recovered, hold the reset button for approximately 10 seconds, or follow the model-specific reset procedure. After signing in, open the Operation Mode, Wireless, Advanced Settings, or Quick Setup area. Select Repeater, Universal Repeater, or Range Extender when that choice is available. Do not select Access Point mode for a cable-free installation because access-point mode normally expects an Ethernet connection from the main router.
Run a Site Survey to scan for nearby wireless networks. Identify the SSID broadcast by the primary router and select it. Keep the unit away from thick concrete walls, large appliances, metal cabinets, cordless phone bases, and other sources of radio interference. A shelf at waist or desk height is often preferable to a closed cabinet or floor-level position. Check the status lights or wireless status page for the upstream connection and signal level.

Confirm that the device receives an IP address from the primary router, opens the Edimax setup page when needed, and reaches websites or other local network resources.
