Configuring an Edimax Router as a Wireless Bridge
An Edimax router can often be used as a wireless bridge to connect wired equipment to an existing Wi-Fi network. In this arrangement, the Edimax device receives wireless data from the primary router and passes that connection to computers, televisions, game consoles, network storage devices, or Ethernet switches through its LAN ports.
A bridge is different from a standard wireless router or range extender. The primary router continues to manage internet access, IP addresses, security, and network services, while the Edimax unit works as a wireless client for the upstream network. This can be useful when running a new Ethernet cable is impractical.
The names and available settings vary by Edimax model and firmware version. Some interfaces use “Wireless Bridge,” while others use “Client Bridge,” “WDS,” “Universal Repeater,” or a similar term. The setup process remains broadly similar: identify the correct operating mode, connect to the Edimax administration page, join the main Wi-Fi network, and test the wired connection.
What wireless bridge mode does
In bridge mode, the Edimax router establishes a wireless connection with a main router or access point. Devices connected to the Edimax LAN ports then communicate through that wireless link. In a transparent bridge configuration, those devices usually receive IP addresses from the primary router rather than from the Edimax unit.
This mode is suitable for equipment that has an Ethernet port but lacks reliable Wi-Fi. A smart television, desktop computer, media player, printer, or security recorder can use the bridge without requiring its own wireless adapter. The Edimax device may also feed several wired devices when connected to an Ethernet switch.
Bridge mode does not always extend wireless coverage in the same way as a repeater. Depending on the model, the Edimax Wi-Fi radio may be dedicated to communicating with the primary router, leaving little or no wireless service for nearby clients. If wireless coverage is the main goal, an access point or range extender mode may be more appropriate.
Some Edimax firmware combines bridge functions with routing or NAT. If the setup screen offers several related choices, select the mode that specifically describes a client or wireless bridge. A WISP mode may also use a wireless uplink, but it commonly creates a separate private network and performs routing, which is different from a transparent bridge.
Prepare both routers before setup
Record the primary router’s Wi-Fi name, wireless password, security type, and operating channel before changing the Edimax settings. WPA2-Personal with AES is widely supported, while older bridge hardware may not connect to WPA3-only networks. If the main router uses a mixed security mode, check whether the Edimax model supports it.
Place the Edimax router close to the primary router during configuration. A short distance reduces the chance of losing the wireless connection while you save settings. Once the bridge works, move it to a location where the signal remains strong enough for stable data transfer. Write down the existing network range as well. For example, the main router may use 192.168.1.1 and distribute addresses from 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.200. Open the Edimax setup interface
With the computer connected to the Edimax router, open a web browser and enter the device’s management address. Common Edimax defaults include 192.168.2.1, but the exact address depends on the product. Some models also use a local setup name such as edimax.setup. The address printed on the router label or listed in its quick installation guide takes priority over a general default.
If the page does not load, check that the computer has received an address from the Edimax device. Temporarily disable mobile data or another active network connection so the browser does not use a different gateway. You can also inspect the computer’s network details to identify the default gateway, which is often the router’s current management address.
Log in with the administrator credentials shown in the documentation or on the device label. If the router has been configured previously and the password is unknown, a factory reset may be necessary. Hold the reset button for the period specified by Edimax, usually while the device is powered on, then wait for the status lights to indicate that the reset has completed.
After logging in, locate the operating mode or network mode page. The menu may appear under “Wireless,” “Internet,” “Advanced,” or “Operation Mode.” Read the short description beside each option rather than selecting a mode based only on its name. Select the wireless bridge settings
Choose Wireless Bridge, Client Bridge, or the closest equivalent available on the Edimax model. The setup wizard may scan for nearby networks. Select the primary router’s SSID and enter its wireless password exactly as configured. Wireless passwords are case-sensitive, and an accidental space at the beginning or end can prevent association.
If the network is hidden, enter the SSID manually. Also confirm the wireless band supported by the bridge. A dual-band Edimax unit may allow a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz uplink, while older models may support only 2.4 GHz. Some firmware asks for a bridge profile, remote access point address, or WDS details instead of presenting a simple network scan. WDS compatibility can depend on chipset and security settings, so the primary router may need WDS enabled as well. If the main router does not support the required bridge standard, client bridge or universal repeater mode may be the more practical option.
Save the configuration and allow the Edimax router to restart. The wireless indicator should show an established link after booting. Do not interrupt power during this process. If the setup page disappears, wait several minutes before trying to reconnect, since the router may have changed its LAN address or disabled DHCP as part of bridge operation.
Assign a manageable LAN address
A bridge still needs a management address even when it no longer acts as the network’s DHCP server. If the Edimax firmware asks for a LAN IP address, assign one in the same subnet as the primary router. For a main router at 192.168.1.1, an address such as 192.168.1.2 may work, provided no other device is using it.
The chosen address should ideally be outside the primary router’s DHCP range. For example, if automatic addresses begin at 192.168.1.100, an Edimax management address of 192.168.1.2 is less likely to conflict. Another safe method is to create a DHCP reservation for the Edimax address in the primary router’s administration interface.
Disable the Edimax DHCP server when the bridge mode instructions require it. Two DHCP servers on the same local network can give clients conflicting gateways and DNS information. Symptoms include intermittent internet access, incorrect IP addresses, or devices appearing on different parts of the network.
After the bridge has rebooted, reconnect the computer to the Edimax LAN port and check its network details. If the computer receives an address from the primary router, the bridge is probably operating transparently. To reopen the Edimax interface, use the new management address rather than the factory default.
Verify the connection and troubleshoot failures
Start testing with one Ethernet device connected directly to an Edimax LAN port. Confirm that it receives an IP address, default gateway, and DNS server from the primary router. Open the primary router’s client list to see whether the Edimax bridge or the connected device appears there.
Test local communication before testing internet access. A device connected through the bridge should normally be able to reach the primary router’s address and other permitted local devices. If local access works but websites do not load, inspect DNS settings and the primary router’s internet connection rather than immediately changing the Edimax wireless configuration.
A weak uplink signal can cause slow speeds, packet loss, and repeated disconnections. Move the Edimax closer to the main router, raise it above floor level, and keep it away from thick masonry or large metal objects. Keep the bridge stable and secure

Update the Edimax firmware only with a version intended for the exact hardware revision. Firmware updates can improve wireless compatibility and security, but installing software for a similar-looking model can make the router unusable. Back up the configuration first if the interface provides an export option.
Use WPA2-AES or WPA3 when both the primary router and Edimax model support it. Avoid outdated WEP security and legacy mixed modes. The bridge inherits much of its security from the upstream wireless network, so the primary router should also use a strong password and current firmware.
Review the arrangement after several days of normal use. Check whether the bridge remains associated, whether wired devices retain their addresses, and whether throughput is sufficient for the intended workload.
